Vail Locals…Fill out the Survey
8/14 update: your engagement made a difference!!!!!
There are TWO Vail Destination Stewardship Surveys that CLOSE on August 5th.
The participation from the demographic of people under 45 years old, that make a paycheck, and do not own a home is abysmal.
The lack of representation from the majority of our community is extremely concerning because these surveys will guide the course of major policy decisions and investments for the Town of Vail in the future. If the survey data is not reflective of the diversity of our community, the policy and investments that follow will also not be reflective of diversity.
Data is important - that's why we write about it so much. The lack of representation was also reflected in the results of the Vail Community Survey.
Your voice - your scrolling thumb - is a terrifyingly powerful force. Use it.
How to Take Action
If you LIVE in VAIL: Take the Vail Resident Survey: (Full Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N9P9QJC)
If you WORK in VAIL, but LIVE elsewhere (Avon, Eagle, Summit, Leadville, anywhere else): Take the Eagle Country Resident Survey: (Full Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9TCX79R)
If you just cannot…
If you are unable to complete the survey because it is not optimized for mobile, it's too long, the questions are confusing or redundant, or you were unaware that this survey was even intended for you - do not hesitate to email your feedback to publicinput.vailtowncouncil@vailgov.com or/and towncouncil@vailgov.com
Sticky Expectations
Let's set this expectation publicly: The final result of Vail's Destination Stewardship must clearly define exactly who we are -- and exactly what we mean when we say "quality of life", "our culture", "our values", and "our environment" - in specific, actionable, measurable terms.
Who are we protecting Vail for? Who are we protecting Vail from? We cannot protect what we are unwilling or unable to define.
Sticky Quotes from the Community
"We are no longer attracting the best of the best. The best of the best have choices when it comes to employment, and if it means living six people to a home in - overcrowded conditions - in substandard housing, they're going to choose to go somewhere else."
"The only parking problems we'll ever have is when there is nobody parking here. If we're parking on the roads and things are full - those aren't problems, those are opportunities..."
"What is bad about Vail's environment? What is taking place that is so egregious that we need to change it? I understand that sustainability is a big thing right now; but are we really doing that badly?"
"COVID started two and half years ago. We went down to zero and then we came back and went through the roof as far as visitation. I've heard there is a 6% chance we'll be in a recession in the next 18 months. How hard do we think we need to work to manage this growth, and how much of it will naturally take care of itself potentially moving forward."
"Be aware of how much pressure you're putting on the businesses when you're coming up with all the ideas to be the heroes. Whether it's economic, environmental, or social....be aware of the pressure you're putting on to businesses. You have costs that are rising every day, all over the world, from actual real issues in the world - not Vail just trying to be a hero."
